Clean windows make your while house look better. Not only can you see more clearly out of them without being distracted by smudges, you’ll enjoy a boost in curb appeal from the outdoors. But clean windows don’t just happen by accident. The next good rain storm won’t get them clean! But thankfully with warm weather on our doorstep, you can start planning your spring cleaning tasks for your windows. Here are a few helpful tips.

Choose a Gloomy Day

While sunny days are best for motivating yourself to get outside and tackle some chores, it’s best to wait for a cloudy yet dry day to wash your windows. This is because the sun will dry the soap and water on your windows very quickly, leading to streaks. This defeats the whole purpose of washing them!

Those streaks are hard to remove, too, which means you have to put even more effort into the job. If you have no choice but to do it on a sunny day, start with the shady spots of your home.

Get Rid of Dust and Dirt

Before you start washing, remove all dust and dirt with a brush or vacuum with brush attachment. If you skip this step, you’ll end up with a muddy mess when you add in the water. Get into the corners for that stuck-on grime. Take the time to clean your screens of dirt. Clean your screens in the shower or in a large bin or tote with soap and warm water. Rinse with the shower attachment or a hose. Let them dry.

If you have blinds on your windows, open the slats and gently wash them down with a wet cloth. Let dry and take a pass at them with a microfiber duster.

Take off the curtains or toppers and wash them. If they can’t be washed in the machine, just toss them in the dryer for a quick refresh.

Break Down Your Tasks

Window cleaning can be pretty tedious so don’t rush it. It’s best to break it down into manageable chunks, going room by room methodically. When cleaning, wipe down one side horizontally and the other vertically. Use a microfiber cloth or squeegee rather than paper towels so you don’t leave dust behind. Actually, newspaper is a good thing to try for streak-free windows.

With an absorbent, lint-free cloth, try a Z-like formation, then reverse that direction on the other side so you can quickly spot streaks and get rid of them.

Protect the Area

Window locks, hinges and frames can get damaged by harsh chemicals and soaps. Be careful when cleaning, or block off those areas with towels. You’ll also want to lay down towels on the floor to catch drips.
