Most quality replacement windows will consist of either double pane or triple pane glass. The additional layers help provide important and effective insulation performance. But the “secret ingredient” in the glass sandwich is something you cannot see – gas.
An invisible layer of inert gas, typically either argon or krypton, is pumped in between the panes of glass then sealed during the manufacturing process. The gas is denser than the atmosphere, which increases the window’s R-value of resistance to heat or cold. The result, when paired with a quality frame, is a more effective thermal barrier that helps keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
Argon or Krypton?
The standard gas used in multi-pane windows is argon. But many homeowners choose to upgrade to krypton which, although a more expensive option, is a significantly more effective deterrent to heat transfer. In addition, windows can be coated with a microscopically thin layer of perforated metal call “low-e” coating (for “low emissivity”) which reflects heat and UV rays.
Among the benefits you will enjoy when you install gas-filled windows in your home include:
- Improved soundproofing
- Increased energy efficiency for lower heating & cooling bills
- Lowered possibility of frost and condensation
- Blocked ultraviolet rays to reduce fading in carpets, drapes and furniture
