The Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1, and regardless of where you live in the country, if you are in a few hundred miles of coastal shoreline, your property could be at risk for storm damage.

Hundreds of miles wide, hurricanes can impact huge regions that are well away from the coast, and for a myriad of reasons.

High winds, storm surge, and heavy rains are all associated with tropical systems, and any of these factors can cause unexpected damage to your home, even if you are outside the direct path of the storm.

So ensure your house is secure, regardless of where you live, by considering these tips that will help minimize any storm-related damage, no matter what the weather brings.

1. Mind the Gaps

Wind-driven rain can easily infiltrate even the smallest gaps in doorways and windows, leading to water damage inside and throughout the home.

Look for minor gaps and cracks that indicate a window or door replacement is necessary. And in a pinch, use old towels to block out wind-driven rain when the storm approaches.

2. Look Up

Overhanging tree branches can easily fall and cause roof damage when there’s a hurricane approaching, as even a tropical storm can bring sustained winds of up to 74 miles per hour. Cut any branches or large trees that are too close to the house to protect your roof and everything under it.

3. Keep Gutters Clear

Hurricanes can bring massive amounts of rain in a short amount of time, and all of this water has to go somewhere! Check your gutters and downspouts at the start of hurricane season to ensure they are clear of debris to encourage the water to flow away from your home, and not impact your attic, roof, or interior.

4. Keep Your Ground Level Clear

Storm surge is one of the biggest causes of hurricane damage, and it can occur miles away from the coastline. As rivers, lakes, estuaries, and other bodies of water overflow, this wall of water can lead to flash flooding throughout a region and can cause massive damage to anything that’s at ground level.

As such, if a storm is approaching, move your valuables – like lawn equipment, vehicles, and tools – off of the ground and to an elevated location at least five feet above sea level to keep them safe and secure during the storm.

5. Get Protected

Homeowners insurance can cover a wide range of storm-related issues, but it might not cover everything! Do a regular check-up of your homeowner’s insurance policy to ensure that when it comes to wind damage, flood damage, and other storm-related issues, you are well protected.

Flood insurance is typically a modest extra cost, but it adds an extra layer of protection that can be instrumental in getting back to normal after a storm has affected your home.
